Crypto Hacker Ordered To Pay £1m To His Victims

The Southwark Crown Court in the UK has ordered that Grant West, 27, from Kent, compensate his victims, following a stream of successful phishing attacks. The hacker, who used the pseudonym Courvoisier, has been found guilty of stealing vast amounts of user data from major companies, including Argos, Uber and Sainsbury’s, and selling it on the dark web in exchange of Bitcoin.

The highly volatile value of Bitcoin made it very difficult to determine the compensation total in pound sterling. According to prosecutor Kevin Barry, at the time of the confiscation of Bitcoin wallets, the value of the digital currency was close to $2 million, but this has now almost halved.

West’s arrest and prosecution come as a result of the UK’s Metropolitan Police’s efforts to combat cybercrimes, which have seen a massive growth following the introduction of cryptocurrencies.
