Following the arrest of the Wikileaks founder on Thursday, the online community has been donating to his cause. So far, more than 6.7 BTC, or roughly $34,000, has been donated to the Wikileaks bitcoin wallet address since British police seized him from the Ecuadorian Embassy on Thursday. He had been hauled up inside the walls of the embassy for 7 years after breaching bail conditions in the UK to avoid being extradited to face charges in America and Sweden. However, after the Ecuadorian president withdrew asylum from the former journalist and computer programmer he was arrested on the April 11th 2019. He has become somewhat of a cult hero to many, following his exposure of war crimes, human rights abuses, and corruption via the platform Wikileaks. This has now been demonstrated by these donations made up 314 transactions. These are likely to have come from fans of the platform, many of whom had been campaigning since his initial arrest for his freedom. These funds that have so far been donated will be used for his legal fees now that he will face trial. First in the UK for breaching bail, then, possibly, Sweden and the US, if extradition procedures are completed. His main crime being the illegal hacking of government websites in order to get the information published by Wikileaks. While the funds will be only a small portion of the funds he will need, it is still a testament to the support he has in the online community. Coincidently, Assange is also a long-term supporter of Bitcoin, with tweets dating back to 2010 where he put his support behind the cryptocurrency.
